Members of the African-American Youth Leadership Program were at the State Capitol last month, working on balancing the State budget and getting hands-on experience as California legislators. The trip to the Capitol is part of our annual summer conference that welcomes high school juniors and seniors to spend a week in Sacramento to learn about leadership in education, finance, health and politics.

BYLP 2010 Open House

The Black Youth Leadership Project, Inc. is hosting a
one-day open house at the State Capitol geared toward African-American high
school students interested in California politics, public policy, civics,
governmental service, and/or community service on Friday, February 26, 2010.
Students will participate with capitol staff in mock
committee hearings and a legislative floor session, passing laws that are
important to them.The purpose of the
open house is to encourage African-American students in grades 9-12 to
regularly interact with their state's political and community leaders and to
use this opportunity to discuss the legislative process, timely Policy
concerns, and the role of democracy and advocacy within our communities.

Join California Black Media on September 12, 2009 as we debut California's first Online Directory of Black Elected Officials in the State of California. The directory offers a comprehensive listing of Black Elected Officials currently serving in the State of California from congressional representatives, state legislators, county officials, mayors, city council members and school board members positioned within California’s 58 counties. In partnership with the Research and Policy Institute of California, the California Black Media will the debut the directory on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Marriott Airport Ontario, 2200 East Holt Boulevard Ontario, Ca 91761 from 4pm-6pm. They will host two receptions for the elected officials, one reception in Southern California and another reception in Northern California. The Southern California reception will be hosted by Mayor Walt Allen, City of Covina and the Coalition of California Black School Board Members. Special remarks will be given by Timothy Alan Simon, California Public Utilities Commissioner, Tommy Ross, President, Research and Policy Institute of California and Virniecia Davis, President, Coalition of California Black School Board Members.
